Assessing the competition

In terms of competition in the fitness industry’s presence on the internet there are only a few large contenders that make up a big portion of the public domains viewing. These include Freeletics, PureGym and MyProtein and Bodybuilding.com. There are more in the market but these are ones that i use and i know a lot of other people around me use as well. As you can see form the screenshots about they all seem to use a similar style on their homepages.

The common themes i see with all of these are:

  • Top left hand corner logo
  • Scrolling header images
  • Blue, black and white colour theme
  • Relevant images embedded in different shapes opposed to the default rectangle
  • Rollover navigational bar
  • Small graphics alongside text
  • A variety of bold, italics, capitals and underlined texts.

With these top websites sharing these very common themes, i feel it is only necessary to use these and more in my own. These big companies have put a lot of time and effort into their websites and i’m sure research as well, therefore they know what works well and what doesnt. helping me along my way to making a successful good looking site.

I have also noticed that all of these websites use a blue theme the most on their pages and logos. I think this is something i need to reserach a bit more and figure out if this is merely coincidence or if it is something more.

Colour palette ideas

looking at colour palettes in order to gage a good scheme to suit my branding around, for branding i want a 5 tone colour, one of them neutral for the backgrounds, i also want healthy colours. Research has told me that these are the colous in food that are healthiest:

colours

Orange and green seem to be colours that compliment each other in terms of web design. However if these colours are vibrant they seem to clash in a way that doesn’t feel pleasing on the eye. therefore i would either need to overlay these colours onto images to soften the vibrance or i would need to create pastel versions of these colours. Here is an example of a colour swatch with green and orange with some other fill colours which i think creates quite a good theme.

I have also looked at some colour palettes that have ben given out on the internet. These are good in terms of gaging the type of palettes that are used on websites and the standard colours that make up simple websites.

Example 2

Although these are nice i feel like they could suit other branded companies better than mine. neither of them scream health to me and i feel that would reflect badly on the company.

the logo would also need to suit the branding scheme and therefore i need to take that into consideration when choosing the final colours. I feel that the palette that i have made is perhaps a bit dark and i should use some lighter pastels in order to get that bright healthy feeling.

ATMOSPHERIC PERSPECTIVE ETC – SEMESTER 2 WEEK 4

Focusing on some design principles from Johns lecture we created our own atmospheric perspective images using the laws of rule of thirds and symmetry/asymmetry. Creating an image thats pleasing on the eye and also aesthetically correct.

My attempts:

Using some downloaded brushes we all managed to create an image that sold the effect in pretty a quick manor. With this exercise i have seen how to the use of brushes can aid to make shapes that would take a long time to perfect if being hand drawn, but can be pasted quickly to give a rough guide of a design. This will aid me in the designing of my products advertising and concepts designs. helping me to churn out a load of different examples, and then ruling out the bad ones and starting over again.

Atmospheric perspective is also something i am actually interest in using in my designs, background designs and the logo for example will take on this style well. At the moment i am unsure if i will actually use this style, but it is something to keep in mind and play about.

QR codes may not be useable!

I have been told that i may not be able to use QR codes as they cannot carry that much data that the application would need, however they can carry a link to a web browser and then that web page could carry out the task.

NFC – near field communication may be possible to tap to log in and log out.

some information on QR codes – http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/how-qr-codes-can-grow-your-business/

useful for me to understand how the work and what they are capable of. If my thinking is correct then each user will be able to sign in and their unique ID will correspond to the QR web link’s page.

  • Each user has unique sign in ID
  • Each QR code has a webpage it links to.
  • When a unique user is logged in and they scan the QR code only their data will show as they are logged in.
  • The webpage will then have unique saved data from last time and parameters to input, along with a save button.

As long as the content can be created on the website, all the QR code needs to do is link to the page. Simple hyperlinking but within a real life scenario. E.g. on a piece of gym equipment.

IDEAS BRAINSTORM – SEMESTER 2 WEEK 3

design- for whichever outlet and platform used, design will be key.

A polygonal theme is a very 21st century to me, modern simplicity is the key to this. Busyness isn’t helpful to the concept of simplicity and therefore i feel a polygonal design will work to suit the aims.

Example of polygonal art (possible logo design theme too)

In terms of the EYA categories origins of the ‘Healthy Life’ section i would still like to stay on track towards hitting the gym goer target audience, this audience is the best for my target as i see so many applications and websites trying to give workouts for the gym and routines yet they are so complicated and long winded that the average user find it hard to keep up with. The idea of a logging platform helps with this situation as its not trying to compete with the gym routine apps, its simply making them easier to remember and understand.
